![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Are the pronouns like "e" and "eir" for a neuter gender? What is a "neman" or a "nuncle?" Do people choose their sexual identity when they become adults? If so, is this a physical (surgical?) choice, or just some kind of choice of what clothes to wear? Is the linguistic stuff just something about the culture of the protagonist, or is it language being used to describe some set of biological or social facts that are present in other cultures as well? Are there two different divisions of humanity, the Radchaai with one sex and the rest of humanity with three? It seems like there are distinctions that are important enough to be marked with the pronouns and other vocabulary, but I can't figure out what those distinctions would be. Can anyone explain what's going on? I'm getting the impression that maybe there are three sexes, a male, a female, and a neuter, which I guess would require some major biological changes in Homo sapiens.? It seems like a different setup than Ancillary Justice. I'm currently half-way through Ann Leckie's novel Provenance, and am finding myself really confused by the pronouns and sexes. ![]()

Also the story of Jurassic Park, posing as an adventure park for grown ups, holds a warning not to mess with the genealogy of evolution, as does another of Crichton’s novels, titled Next, discussing Bigpharma’s hunt for power and money rather than cures. ![]() To this day – and I might add to this day more than ever – the story about an unknown virus threatening humanity is a constant reminder of our vulnerability. His debut, ‘The Andromeda Strain’, made him famous overnight in 1969. You’ve probably heard of Crichton as the creator of Jurassic Park and the television series E.R. With the circumstances as they are in the world right now, I find myself thinking a lot of the novel ‘ State of Fear’, published in 2004 written by American author Michael Crichton. ![]() ![]() ![]() The characters in this book are not young professionals trying to make it in the city, nor are they college students. Making Faces is essentially a New Adult novel, but it’s quite different from most others I’ve read. If you can get through the first few chapters, this is a rewarding reading experience. However, the good parts of this book are truly very good and particularly in the second half, some of the more emotional scenes are incredibly moving. As with many self-published books I’ve read, this one would have benefited from tighter editing. I found Harmon’s book to be something of a mixed bag. I can’t recall why I picked up Making Faces, but I do remember it generating a fair amount of buzz about 5 or 6 years ago, so I suspect I downloaded it out of curiosity. ![]() ![]() ![]() “A healthy democracy requires trust: trust in systems, trust in institutions, and trust in leaders.
